Flockton Finalist's Flickr Festoonery

This illustration by Rogerio Lupo of Brazil is the First Prize winner of the Margaret Flockton Award for 2010

I mentioned the Margaret Flockton Exibition and Award on this blog last week. This is the latest update from the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney Facebook Page:

"First Prize winner of the Margaret Flockton Award 2010 for scientific botanical illustration, a drawing of Vellozia sp. nov. by Rogerio Lupo of Brazil. Entries came from Australia, New Zealand, UK, USA, Spain, Mexico, Poland and Brazil. The Brazilians shone this year. Rogerio Lup also received a highly commended for another illustration, as did fellow Brazilian Klei Sousa.

See the exhibition weekdays from now till 9 July in our Red Box Gallery, Mrs Macquaries Rd. You can also see the six winning entries on Flickr."

A 'festoonery' is of course a group of objects arranged in a 'festoon' - i.e. hanging in a curve. Due to the limitations of Flickr we can't do that kind of arrangement but it's a word with a botanical association and of course nice literation here. I also blame James Joyce, who I've been reading.

“The artist, like the God of the creation, remains within or behind or beyond or above his handiwork, invisible, refined out of existence, indifferent, paring his fingernails” - JJ

He also said “The demand that I make of my reader is that he should devote his whole Life to reading my works”. But then, he did not write orrible effing edlines like the one above. :)

I love the advice.

Endeavour I shall to remain detached from my words, fingernails pared, my headlines tended further.

BTW my oeuvre on freshwater red algae is available to anyone who wants to devote his/her life to serious works.

Perhaps you also missed the apostrophe, which I've added - I think correctly...
